The Age of Magic Long before the events of The Fives' Oath, magic flowed through every corner of the world. It nourished the land, empowered kingdoms, and connected mortals to forces beyond their understanding. Witches blessed the harvests, mages forged enchanted weapons, healers cured deadly plagues, and craftsmen created wonders that seemed impossible. At the heart of this age stood Ravenhelm — the greatest realm ever known. Its bright towers gleamed beneath the sun, its cities prospered, and its people believed the golden age would last forever. They were wrong.
The Rise of Darkness
The fall began with a single man. Radnar Sorethorn, once a respected scholar, became consumed by a desire for forbidden knowledge and absolute power. Delving into ancient cursed texts, he mastered dark rituals long abandoned by mankind and created the Shadowed Legion— an army of monstrous beasts and spectral warriors born from nightmare itself. War followed. Forests burned. Rivers ran red with blood. Entire kingdoms collapsed beneath the Legion's advance. As Ravenhelm descended into chaos, kings abandoned their thrones and armies shattered beneath the weight of Radnar's growing darkness. The end of the world seemed inevitable.
The Warrior from the Iron Vales When hope had nearly vanished, a warrior emerged from the harsh northern lands known as the Iron Vales. His name was Zarek Blackskull. He wore no crown. He commanded no kingdom. He carried only a sword and an unbreakable will. Crossing the Golden Sea only with a few followers, Zarek challenged Radnar in a battle that would become legend. Beneath a storm-torn sky, steel clashed against shadow as the fate of Ravenhelm hung in the balance. At the battle's end, Zarek drove his blade through Radnar's heart. The Shadowed Legion collapsed. The darkness retreated. And Ravenhelm was saved.
The Ten Trials
Victory came with a terrible realization. Radnar Sorethorn was dead, but the darkness he had unleashed could never be fully destroyed. Determined to ensure Ravenhelm would never again stand defenseless against such evil, Zarek Blackskull continued his war against the remnants of magic and forged what would become known as the Ten Trials. These merciless trials were designed to test every aspect of a warrior's being: courage, strength, endurance, loyalty, discipline, and the very soul itself. For years, aspiring warriors trained relentlessly, preparing for the day they would face the trials and prove their worth. And challenge The Maw of Shadows, a pit of darkness where the ten trials await the many and only let a few survive. For centuries many entered. Most perished. Those who emerged were forever changed. They had faced the abyss and returned. They earned the title: Black Skull, after being a Red Skull, and starting as a Green Skull. The Blackskull name is not only granted by birth, wealth, status, or nobility. The title also needs to be earned through sacrifice, suffering, and survival. To become a Black Skull was to join an unbroken brotherhood of warriors sworn to stand against the darkness, no matter the cost.
The Prophecy Near the end of his life, Zarek uttered words that would haunt Ravenhelm for centuries: “In triumph's shadow, reckoning stirs. Blood of my blood shall rise, not in honour but in defiance, to shatter chains of light and usher in darkness.” The prophecy became the greatest fear of the Blackskull bloodline. Generation after generation, chiefs and warriors lived beneath its shadow, fathers feared their sons, kings feared for their thrones, and the world feared them. All wondering which descendant might one day fulfil the ancient warning.
The Present Day
Three centuries have passed. A new age began with Zarek Blackskull's victory over Radnar Sorethorn. The years that followed became known as A.R. — After Radnar. Under the rule of the mighty Royal Ravenscar Dynasty, Ravenhelm has endured centuries of prosperity, war, plague, and bloodshed. Kingdoms rose and fell, generations were born and buried, yet the realm survived. From the capital of Goldenfist the Ravenscar kings continue to rule. Far to the south, in the harsh lands of the Iron Vales, the feared Blackskull Clan remains vigilant. There, generation after generation, they forge Ravenhelm's most formidable warriors and prepare them for the Ten Trials. Ready to answer the call. For three hundred years, the prophecy of Zarek Blackskull has remained unfulfilled. Until, 334 A.R.
